THUNDERSTRUCK CANADA DANCE COMPETITION

Jul 10 2014

Attended finals last year; pretty terrible. Very small finals; at least 75% of the numbers belonged to two studios. It was unclear how they chose dances to be in the final dance off (or whatever they call it) as most of our numbers ended up in it (even the very weak ones). The \'dance off\' was pretty much two studios so, as you can imagine, there were many quick changes and conflicts. The adjudication was extremely poor; there seemed to be little consideration given to technique. Some dances were scoring well even though they were extremely weak, technically. To add to this, they had selected some numbers to do a \'special performance\' on an outdoor stage. It was a good experience, but the stage was tiny and mostly taken up by band equipment; I don\'t understand how it fit in with the competition, it seemed weird. The co-owner was not very friendly and gave off a cold vibe; she seemed like she hated being there. The staff did not seem to enjoy working for the competition and it was not a fun atmosphere overall. Will not attend ever again, would not recommend to person I dislike.

Only half way through weekend and wish it was over. Very frustrating. They need signage, a properly organized schedule (way too many quick changes) and better communication between staff. The lighting is terrible - downstage is dark, strobe and spot lights are in the way and used indiscriminately. We can\'t see judges at all during adjudication. They used strobe lights during acro routines which is dangerous. They used a fog machine which hurts the kids throats and caused the sprinklers to go on during awards so the kids were wet. After paying registration fees parents had to pay a $5 fee at the door. They told us the venue cost $18 000 to rent for weekend yet the school board website puts that price at far under that. The co-owner has an interesting history - Very disappointing! Staff need to be identified with a t-shirt at least. Kids get dumb wrist bands that are random - not associated to level of achievement; they hate this - all trophies + plaques go to studio (and they are running out of space) Would much prefer something for the kids to take home. I was only mildly irritated by these flaws in past years but they need to get it together. All in all - terrible experience.

We decided to try this competition in 2012 and we will not return. The judging was sub par. In some cases, it was downright offensive. The judging panel were all very young and none of them had experience as a dance teacher or had experience with running a studio. They had no idea what the level of dance should be for each age group. There were only 2 award ceremonies per day which was very difficult for those who had to wait around for 6 hours to attend the adjudication. And during the adjudication, the emcee wanted to tell you their life story. It was so difficult to sit through when all you wanted to do was go home and rest for the next day\'s routines. We found that the competition was more concerned with being hip and cool rather than being a reputable and high-quality dance competition with judges who are experienced with working with and teaching young dancers and not just choreographing.

A horrible competition. Inexperienced judges are used that are inconsistent and do not care for technique. In fact your dancers will be lucky if one of the judges even lifts his eyes off the table to watch them. We have attended regionals two years and are still waiting for our overall cash awards to be mailed to us. In fact this year we didn\'t even receive our score sheets. I have tried addressing with issues via email to Jeff Valin more than once but he doesn\'t even brother to reply. Our studio gave them over 15,000.00 in entry fees and workshops fees. I would have expected better. They like the money but fail on all other matters.
